Measures for a strong rail system
The Hamburg/Bremen – Hanover rail project comprises several sections. It involves the expansion of existing rail lines over a total length of 400 kilometers. The project achieves its impact through a mix of different measures:
- More capacity for freight transport to strengthen the port-related economy in Northern Germany
- Better travel options for the people in the region
- More punctuality and reliability in railway operations
More passenger and freight traffic
More and more people are traveling by train. More and more goods are being transported by rail. The Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) anticipates an increase in transport volume until 2030. Compared to 2010, freight traffic is expected to increase by 38 percent and passenger traffic by 12.9 percent.
This results in a projected rail freight volume of approximately 108 million tons for the Hamburg-Bremen-Hanover region in 2030 – equivalent to around 25 percent of the total rail freight volume in Germany. The main reason for this is the proximity to the North German seaports, where numerous goods are transshipped and transported by rail daily – a figure that is expected to rise.
